The Case for Simpler Commercial Audio Systems

Ross Eberlin & Reza Mohammed of Bluesound Professional

In commercial AV, more capability can often mean more complexity. Sophisticated control platforms have an important role in projects that require coordination across audio, lighting, HVAC, conferencing, and other building systems. But not every application needs that level of functionality.

For a restaurant, café, retail store, or similar commercial environment, day-to-day audio requirements may be relatively straightforward. Staff might need to adjust volume or change the music, while a manager requires access to additional controls. Designing around those actual requirements can result in a system that is easier to install, easier to operate, and better suited to the space.

Start with What the User Actually Needs

A control interface should make routine tasks straightforward. Giving every user access to every available function can introduce unnecessary steps and increase training requirements.

This becomes particularly important in environments with multiple levels of users. A manager may need broader control over music selection and system configuration, while general staff may only need access to volume. Providing each user with the appropriate level of control can make the system more intuitive without sacrificing the functionality required to manage it.

There is a practical operational benefit as well. Restaurants and retail businesses regularly onboard new employees. The less time required to explain the audio system, the more quickly staff can focus on the responsibilities they were hired to perform.

Reduce Complexity Behind the Interface

Simplicity should extend beyond what the end user sees.

In many smaller commercial spaces, equipment rooms are limited or nonexistent. A manager’s office or back room may have little room for racks of amplifiers, processors, and control hardware. Networked audio architectures can help address that constraint by reducing the number of separate components required to deliver and control audio.

Bluesound Professional’s BCS300 networked ceiling speakers and CP200 wall-mounted control panel, for example, can connect through a PoE network infrastructure. This approach reduces reliance on centralized audio hardware while providing local control where it is needed.

For integrators, fewer components can also mean a more streamlined deployment. Rather than overengineering an installation to accommodate functionality the customer may never use, the system can be designed around current requirements.

Keep Tomorrow in the Design

Simplification does not have to mean limiting what comes next.

A restaurant may begin with a small dining area and later expand into another room. A retailer may decide to reorganize zones as the space evolves. With networked endpoints, system configuration can adapt without being tied to the fixed capacity of a traditional amplifier-based design.

That creates a useful principle for commercial audio design: install what the application needs today while preserving a path for tomorrow.

In Episode 6 of Surroundscapes Season 8, Ross Eberlin and Reza Mohammed explore this idea through the theme “simpler for everyone.” Their conversation looks at commercial audio from the perspectives of integrators, managers, and everyday users, and asks a practical question: How much system does the application actually need?

Sometimes, removing unnecessary complexity is what makes a system more useful.
