Designing Ceiling Speaker Layouts with the Bluesound Professional Speaker Calculator

Ross Eberlin and Reza Mohammed of Bluesound Professional

In Episode 3 of Surroundscapes Season 7, Ross Eberlin and Reza Mohammed walk through the Bluesound Professional Speaker Calculator, a browser-based tool designed to simplify ceiling speaker planning for commercial projects.

Available on the Bluesound Professional website, the free calculator helps integrators determine how many speakers are required for a given space based on room dimensions, ceiling height, listener height, and desired SPL. One of the key concepts explored in the episode is how ceiling height directly affects speaker dispersion and coverage, sometimes resulting in fewer speakers being required as height increases within practical limits.

Ross and Reza explain different coverage strategies, including edge-to-edge spacing, minimum overlap, and maximum overlap. Each layout impacts consistency, wattage requirements, and overall system efficiency. By dynamically adjusting speaker quantity and amplifier power based on target SPL settings, the tool removes much of the guesswork from early-stage design.

Additional features such as drag-and-drop speaker placement, SPL heat mapping, room overlay uploads, and PDF export functionality allow integrators to visualize coverage, refine layouts, and share acoustic analysis with clients or project teams.

For projects that begin with only a floor plan, the Speaker Calculator provides a practical way to model performance, optimize power requirements, and design more predictable ceiling speaker systems.
